One of the questions we're asked most often is simple: when is the best time to go canyoning in Nevidio? The honest answer is that there's no single perfect week — there's a perfect season, and within it the canyon shifts in character from month to month. Understanding how the water behaves through the year is the key to choosing dates that suit you, so here's everything you need to plan your trip with confidence.
When is the Nevidio season?
Our canyoning season runs roughly from June through September, and in some years it stretches into October. The dates are never fixed in advance, because they depend entirely on the water levels in the Komarnica River each year. Early in the season the snowmelt from the surrounding Durmitor peaks keeps the water higher, colder and more powerful. As summer progresses, the levels gradually drop, and by mid to late summer the canyon is at its most accessible and the pools at their friendliest.
Because we only ever operate when conditions are genuinely safe, the season opens and closes according to the mountain rather than the calendar. That's also why we recommend staying a little flexible with your dates — the canyon rewards patience.
A month-by-month feel
- June — Fresh and lively. The water is higher and more energetic from the lingering snowmelt, giving the canyon a powerful, exhilarating feel for those who love a bit of force in the flow.
- July and August — Peak season. The warmest air, the most stable weather and the most accessible water levels. This is when the pools are at their most inviting and the experience is at its most relaxed.
- September — Quieter and beautiful. Fewer visitors, calmer water and gorgeous low-angle light filtering between the cliffs make this a favourite for photographers and anyone seeking a more peaceful day.
What about the water and weather?
Whatever month you choose, the water stays cold all season — often around 10°C even at the height of summer. That never changes, and it's exactly why we always provide full wetsuits along with the rest of your gear, so the chill becomes part of the fun rather than a worry.
Durmitor is a high mountain area, which means the weather can change quickly. Mornings can be cool even in July and August, so it's worth packing a warm layer for before and after the canyon. That said, summer brings the warmest air and the most stable conditions overall, which is part of why those months are so popular.
Travelling in spring?
If your trip falls earlier in the year, Nevidio may not yet be open — but there's still an option. Our other tour, Grabovica, is the opposite of Nevidio: it only runs during the spring snowmelt, roughly from May to late June. Spring visitors can pair their plans around it, and once the season turns, Nevidio takes over for the summer. Between the two, there's wild water to enjoy across much of the year.
When should you book?
For the warmest, most reliable conditions, July and August are the sweet spot — but they're also our busiest months, so we'd encourage you to book ahead if you have your heart set on peak-season dates. If you prefer fewer crowds, June and September are wonderful in their own right. Whenever you come, keep a little flexibility in your itinerary, since we run trips only when the canyon is safe.
