Tucked away in the heart of Durmitor National Park, just above the famous Nevidio Canyon, lies one of Montenegro's best-kept secrets: Grabovica Canyon. Unlike its world-renowned neighbour, Grabovica only wakes up for a handful of weeks each spring, which makes a trip through it one of the rarest canyoning experiences in the whole country.

Where is Grabovica Canyon?

Grabovica sits high in the Durmitor mountains, directly above Nevidio and only about a 20-minute drive from the alpine town of Žabljak. The approach takes you through classic Durmitor scenery — pine forest, open meadows and dramatic peaks — before the landscape opens into a bright, sun-filled gorge that feels a world away from the dark, narrow corridors of Nevidio just below it.

Why it only exists in spring

Grabovica is a seasonal canyon in the truest sense. It comes alive only when snowmelt from the surrounding Durmitor peaks pours down the mountainside, filling the gorge with crystal-clear water, waterfalls and natural slides. Once the snow has finished melting and the flow drops away, the canyon simply quietens down again until the following year.

That short window — roughly from early May to late June — is what makes Grabovica so special. The canyon is genuinely active for only a few weeks each season, so only the lucky few who visit in spring ever get to experience it at its best.

What is the canyon like?

Where Nevidio is deep, narrow and demanding, Grabovica is the opposite in character. It is relatively short — around one kilometre — but wide, open and bathed in sunshine, with an inviting string of natural pools along the way. That combination of gentle terrain and warm light makes it one of the most welcoming canyons we run.

  • Crystal-clear water fed straight from the spring snowmelt
  • Cascading waterfalls and smooth natural slides
  • A series of calm, swimmable natural pools
  • A wide, sunny gorge that stays bright through the day
  • An easy-going route that rewards curiosity over nerve

All of this makes Grabovica ideal for beginners and adventurous families looking for their first taste of canyoning in a stunning yet approachable setting.

What to expect on the day

A trip through Grabovica takes roughly two to three hours from start to finish, with plenty of time to swim, slide and simply soak in the surroundings. Because the water comes straight off the mountains, it stays cold even under the spring sun — usually somewhere around 10–14°C — so a good wetsuit is essential. There is nothing to worry about there: we provide everything you need, from the wetsuit and neoprene layers to the helmet and footwear.

We run the tour for a minimum group size of two participants, keeping things small, personal and relaxed throughout.

Our Grabovica tour

Our Grabovica tour is €100 per person and includes complete equipment, a professional licensed guide, full insurance, all taxes, and photos and videos from your adventure so you can relive it long after the snowmelt has gone. With such a narrow season, the spaces fill quickly — and once the water drops, the canyon is gone until next spring.
