One of the questions we hear most often is a simple one: "Can I do this if I've never been canyoning before?" The answer, happily, is almost always yes. Canyoning is one of those rare adventures that feels thrilling and wild yet remains genuinely accessible to first-timers and families. If you've been wondering whether it's right for you, here's everything you need to know to decide with confidence.
Do I need previous experience?
Not at all. You do not need any previous canyoning experience to join us. What matters far more are three simple things: a basic ability to swim, feeling comfortable in water, and a moderate level of fitness. If you can manage a steady walk, enjoy splashing about and don't panic when you're out of your depth, you already have what it takes.
Every jump along the way is entirely optional, and every obstacle has an easier alternative. That means first-timers are never pushed beyond their comfort zone. If a leap into a pool looks too bold, there's always a gentler way down — and our guides will show you exactly where it is.
What makes it good for beginners?
We deliberately keep our groups small. This isn't a crowded production line; it's a close, personal day out where our guides can stay near you, read your confidence and adjust the pace as we go. For anyone feeling a little nervous, that close attention makes all the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling looked after.
- Small groups with hands-on, personal guiding
- Optional jumps — never compulsory
- An easier route around every obstacle
- A full safety briefing before you reach the water
- All the gear provided, so you arrive with nothing to organise
Is it suitable for families?
It can be a wonderful family adventure. Younger adventurers are welcome to join when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, provided they can swim and are comfortable in water. Because every child is different, we're always happy to advise on suitability before you book — just ask us about your family and we'll give you an honest recommendation. As a general rule, all participants should be in good overall health.
Which canyon should beginners choose?
For families and first-timers, we especially recommend our Grabovica canyon. It's shorter, wide and sunny, with plenty of gentle natural pools to ease into — a relaxed, welcoming introduction to the sport. Do note that Grabovica runs only during the spring season, when the water levels are just right. Our Nevidio canyon is the bigger, more adventurous day out, yet it remains accessible to fit beginners who are happy to push themselves a little further.
What about the gear and the cold?
We provide everything you need: a 5 mm wetsuit, neoprene socks, canyon shoes, a helmet and a harness. The mountain water is genuinely cold — around 10°C — but the wetsuit keeps you warm and snug, and most people quickly forget the chill once the fun begins.
A few practical tips
The most useful thing you can do is be honest with us. Tell us about your fitness and your swimming ability when you book, so we can tailor the pace of the day to your group. On the day itself, all you need to bring is your swimwear and a towel — we'll handle the rest.
